Long Break : About us

This is a modest site. Even humble by surf-travel standards. Quite surprising for a few blokes who’ve travelled around a large part of the world, lived in many countries in various levels of luxury and simplicity, surfed through generations on all manner and size of boards. It’s the stories of our trips to magical places where we found joy in the surf. Not always great surf. Rarely epic. There are no tales of deathpits here, no three-wave hold downs, no thirty second barrels. Just joy. Always joy.

The stories are about what we feel are the important ingredients of a memorable surf trip: friendly people, interesting surroundings, challenging surf that doesn’t scare the hell out of you, uncrowded lineups where you can have a chat with your mates and let a set go by if someone’s in the middle of good story, a coupla cold ones at sunset, a leisurely dinner of local delights, aching arms in the morning and endless hours of fun ahead.

It’s not a comprehensive collection of all the destinations in the surfing world, but reviews of the places we’ve personally visited and the simple truth of what we found there. Sometimes five star. Sometimes under the stars.

We’ve uploaded many of the stories from the old Longbreak magazine and will be adding new ones as we continue our travels. The experiences we share with you are as they happened, without polishing or hype. We do not accept fees from the places and people we visit, just travel and accommodation, so we’re not obliged to present any pigs’ ears as silk purses. As experienced, professional writers, photographers and designers, we’ve earned our living from our craft and our reputation from being accountable for our work. If we do sometimes sound a bit too enthusiastic about a place, that’s just how we felt at the time: stoked.
