Long Break : BALI - SEMINYAK

Only in incense-scented Bali can surfers check the waves before their aircraft touches the tarmac. Groomed lines of white water warp around the cliffs of Uluwatu in the distance as the Boeing lines up for landing. Seconds before touchdown, surfers frolicking at Airport Left and Airport Right flash by in a blur of fibreglass and foam.

The timeless Indonesian island of Bali is a surfer’s paradise, with flawless waves and charming culture thrown into a melting pot of fabulous cuisine and stunning accommodation options.

Sophisticated Seminyak makes a good base for sampling all the bounties of this laid-back tropical island. Centrally located for wave forays, it is far enough from the bustle of Kuta but still in the midst of a thriving restaurant, boutique, day spa and classy cocktail bar precinct.

Surf-travel experts Tropicsurf are now operating in Bali, organising quality hotel or villa and ‘ticket to ride’ surf guiding packages to suit all budgets and ability level

Longbreak used the services of Tropicsurf guide and instructor Jack Chisholm, whose intimate knowledge of Bali’s breaks delivered quality, uncrowded waves at locations even seasoned Indo veterans would find surprising.

Early-morning missions to the south and east coasts of the island are a highlight; quality waves litter the coast from Nusa Dua to Sanur and beyond.

Other surfs are just a stone’s throw from the international airport, where surfers trade waves under slipping jet streams.

Kuta Reef, Airport Left and Airport Right are the well-known breaks, though a handful of others are within easy striking distance from here. Hire a fisherman for outrigger delivery to the waves for 50,000rp (AUD$6).

Longbreak sampled the Boeings and bounties of a perfectly peeling right – the line-up completely deserted – until sunburn and spaghetti arms drove us back to shore in Jimbaran Bay, where the scent of roasting coconut husks and grilling seafood set the salt-encrusted tastebuds salivating.

Great surf trips are made up of the experience and the memories.

The way to ensure they are not eroded by time or corrupted by jealous friends is to have your own photographer accompany you. The drop, the classy fade back down the wall and of course the legendary cover up, all frozen in ones and zeroes for moments of memory refreshing or substantiating dinner-party tales.

Japanese Photographer and now Bail resident Nobu Fuku can offer this service to small groups and individuals on a session, daily or weekly rate. He has the gear, the expertise and the capability to document those extended sessions in the barmy tropic waters. It is worth considering.

Step from the rolling green grass by the poolside directly onto the beach at the Anantara Seminyak, a five-star 60-suite hotel where high-tide lefts and rights peel off directly out front on a small swell.

After a healthy wave count, refresh at Sunset On Seminyak, the hotel’s classy fourth-story cocktail bar, where unparalleled ocean views, snug day beds and DJ grooves await.

Oversized designer marble and glass suites, luxury pampering at the day spa and sunset ocean-front dining in the fabulous hotel restaurant are all highlights of a stay at the Anantara.

The jewel in the hotel’s crown though is impeccable attention to detail – pillows, for example, are dotted with frangipani flowers where not a petal is out of place. A fruit basket full of ripe fleshy flavours greets on arrival. And bubbly staff always remember your name – and how you take your cappuccino or Caipirinha.

Unwind after a hard day on the wave hunt with the ultimate in indulgence: a rose petal foot bath, sea salt scrub and full body Balinese massage at the hotel day spa

Villa Kubu, tucked down a narrow pot-holed alley off Sunset Drive, surprises on arrival. A calm, leafy and tranquil oasis, it offers secluded one, two and three-bedroom villas panelled in cool rainforest timber.

Sensuous fabrics, flowing design and private individual plunge pools – illuminated in emerald green after dark – make these villas an ideal option for couples.

Indonesian flavours delight the palate in Bali, from the warmth of a freshly tossed nasi goreng with chilli to the fragrant coconut-infused richness of beef rendang or a simple vegetable dish of gado gado, smothered in peanut sauce.

As well as a wealth of ambient restaurants and warungs serving local fare, Seminyak isn’t lacking in fine dining options that would not go unremarked on the high street in Melbourne or Milan

For quality local fare without the price tag of the leading Western restaurants, Made’s Warung on the main drag in Seminyak is the place to tuck in, with live music and tables clustered around a courtyard of shops.

A restaurant not to be missed is Nutmegs. Here, the philosophy is serving fresh food sourced entirely from the markets and orchards of Bali. The tasting plates are a real treat.

Less formal and luring a younger set, this bar-cum-restaurant is a funky option for a quality night out with fine food spooned into the mix.

One of the best is Metis, where an unassuming entrance leads to a gorgeous open-air dining courtyard overlooking a flood-lit rice field. Service is impeccable and the dishes – prepared by chef and owner Nicolas Tourneville and ranging from escargots to delicate lobster ravioli and melt-in-your-mouth coral trout – make the evening meal almost an enjoyable as the morning surf.
